Theodore Ushev, director

Born in 1968 in Kyustendil, Bulgaria, Theodore Ushev is a graduate of the National Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. He first made a name as a poster artist in his native country before settling in Montreal, Canada, in 1999. There he quickly acquired a reputation as a prolific and gifted animator, with films such as Vertical (2003), The Man Who Waited (2006, three awards) and Tzartitza (2006, two awards). In 2005, he began work on a trilogy that freely explores drifts in ideologies and artistic sensibilities in the 20th century. The first two instalments, Tower Bawher (2006, six awards) and Drux Flux (2008, four awards), proved considerably successful. Head animator for the 3D film Facing Champlain (Jean-François Pouliot, 2008), Ushev stands out for his keen interest in new content delivery platforms, as exemplified in his website <mortadellatv.com> and his 2006 NFB micro-movie SOU, designed for viewing on mobile phones.

Chris Robinson, writer

Chris Robinson was born in Ottawa in 1967. He is the artistic director of the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) and is a well-known figure in the animated film world. As an author, program planner and historian, his contribution to the promotion of independent animated film earned him the 2004 President’s Award given by ASIFA-east, the New York chapter of the International Animated Film Association. His style is lively and direct. He is quick to speak out vigorously on various platforms and is famous for his outbursts and aversion to empty rhetoric. Robinson authored a column entitled The Animation Pimp on Animation World Magazine’s website from 2000 to 2005. Several of the articles were compiled into a book of the same title in 2007. He continued in the same vein with The Lit Pimp, a monthly column appearing in the Ottawa Xpress.

Robinson is a prolific writer. He published eight books between 2003 and 2009, including Between Genius and Utter Illiteracy: A Story of Estonian Animation (2003, reprinted in 2006), Stole This From a Hockey Card: A Philosophy of Hockey, Doug Harvey, Identity & Booze (2005), Canadian Animation: Looking for a Place to Happen (2008) and Ballad of a Thin Man: In Search of Ryan Larkin (2008). His highly original books are at times autobiographical and tackle a number of topics from an eminently personal point of view. They are infused with a broad spectrum of references ranging from philosophy and art to sports. He is currently working on a novel that delves into the history of animation: Japanese Animation: Time Out of Mind.

The Film

A descent into the maelstrom of anguish that tormented Arthur Lipsett, a famed Canadian experimental filmmaker who died at 49. A diary transmuted into a clash of images and sounds charting a prodigious frenzy of creation, a tableau depicting an artist’s dizzying descent into depression and madness: with Lipsett Diaries, Theodore Ushev renews his filmmaking aesthetic and explores what happens when genius is on a first-name basis with madness
