Griefwalker - an documentary about Stephen Jenkinson, a social worker who counsels palliative care workers and terminally ill patients to embrace death as an essential part of life.

The film

Stephen Jenkinson has been called the Angel of Death. Whether sitting at the bedside of a dying woman, or speaking to clinicians dedicated to delaying death, Jenkinson bears a message that most do not want to hear: that death is not something to be denied or avoided but "befriended."

A Harvard-trained theologian who has travelled far from Western religion, Jenkinson says there is a "hole inside most of us and it's in the approximate shape of a soul."

Griefwalker is filmmaker Tim Wilson's extraordinary portrait of his friend Jenkinson and his work. The film is framed by Wilson's wrestling with his denial of his own death as he nearly succumbs to a sudden illness, and his having to face the death of someone very close to him. Beautifully using the imagery of impermanent nature, Wilson documents Jenkinson's work with the dying while challenging him to explain how "death is the cradle of your love of life."

Griefwalker weaves an illuminating picture of a remarkable man, and leaves us with a deeper understanding of how our deaths should be held as "a prized possession."

Annette Clarke, Producer (NFB)

Annette Clarke's documentaries explore complex social issues by telling the remarkable stories of ordinary people. Her productions have been broadcast across North America, and have also been seen on television and festival screens in Europe, Asia and Australia.

Recent highlights include the award winners Inside Time, a meditation on time with famed bank robber Stephen Reid; Hannah's Story, about a year in the life of an 11-year-old girl committed to helping Canada's homeless; the unflinching Cottonland, which earned three Gemini nominations for its look at the complex nexus of despair and drug dependency in Cape Breton; and White Thunder, a double Gemini nominee about the drama behind the making of a 1920's Paramount picture (The Viking) off the east coast of Newfoundland.

Her current documentaries range from intimate conversations with young Afghan Canadians, to an exploration of cultures that live off the land, yet now are seen as villains by urban environmentalists. In addition to her work in documentary, Clarke also produces animation and cross-platform projects.

Reviews

Tim Wilson trains his lens on our approach to death

Griefwalker might not have made a ideal opening-night film. It is a film about death. More specifically, it's about how Western culture approaches death. Even more specifically, according to Wilson's close friend Stephen Jenkinson, Griefwalker is about how Western culture doesn't approach death... more

Life in the shadow of mortality

Some people call him "the angel of death." At core, he's sharply critical of how Western society tends to deal with death, denying its inevitability for as long as possible and heavily medicating the grief that surrounds it. Instead, Jenkinson maintains, we need to live our lives with a greater appreciation for death, seeing it as the incubator and cradle of life itself... more

The best of the fest

This film follows "Angel of Death" Stephen Jenkinson, a Harvard-schooled theologian who has turned his back on Western religions to foster his own philosophy of death. Jenkinson teaches that there is an art to dying well, and the great fear of death in this culture is robbing people of this important life transition... more
