Serge Giguère
Quebec filmmaker Serge Giguère creates nuanced documentary portraits, revealing what is extraordinary in apparently ordinary subjects. Film scholar Pierre Barrette praises Giguère’s work as “the most exalted form of documentary expression, the finest legacy that the fathers of direct cinema could imagine.” He got his start as assistant camera to such luminaries as Pierre Perrault, Arthur Lamothe and Gilles Groulx, going on to work as cinematographer on over 60 films and directing 11 of his own. He professes affection for the “remarkable neglected individuals” of society, documenting their lives with curiosity, tenderness and respect.
