Nick Broomfield

Idiosyncratic and prolific, English filmmaker Nick Broomfield has a reputation as a docu-provocateur, drawn to sensational subjects and personalities. He frequently employs a participatory approach, appearing as a faux-naif intervenor within his own films: “What's important is the interaction between the filmmakers and those being filmed, and that the audience is aware of that interaction so they can make decisions of their own.” He cites Waiting for Fidel, by Canadian filmmaker Mike Rubbo, and Sherman’s March, by Ross McElwee, as influences. In his 2007 feature drama Battle for Haditha, he re-enacts events surrounding a civilian massacre in the Iraq War. He has collaborated on several films with American cinematographer Joan Churchill.
