Molly Dineen
British documentarian Molly Dineen creates engaging profiles of people and institutions, often interpreted as allegories of contemporary English society. Home from the Hill (1985), profiling a retired army colonel, opened the door to further work for television — successful films like The Ark, about the London Zoo, and In the Company of Men, a three-part series on soldiers serving in Northern Ireland. Her character-driven documentaries address the same broad themes: “It’s me lamenting change,” says Dineen, “the destruction of institutions, or people going through change.” Her 2007 film The Lie of the Land is a thoughtful reflection on the decline of traditional British agriculture. Dineen has won BAFTA and Royal Television Society awards and is the recipient of the Grierson Lifetime Achievement Award.
