Manfred Becker
Having studied journalism and film in his native Germany, Becker moved to Canada where he’s earned a reputation as a gifted documentary director and editor. He has edited over 45 films, including such award winners as Gerrie & Louise, Hitman Hit: Wrestling with Shadows and A Place Called Chiapas. He has worked in partnership with Peter Watkins, Barry Greenwald, Sturla Gunnarson, Nettie Wild and many other directors, and is drawn to films that address social and political concerns. His own films often address historical issues: “History is as subjective as it gets… It’s a way for us to make sense of our role in the present.” Fatherland (2006) is a thoughtful reflection on “what it means to be German in the latter part of the 20th century.” The film won Canada’s prestigious Donald Brittain Award for Best Social/Political Documentary.
