Kim Longinotto
"I want people to feel a real kind of connection with the people in my films," says Longinotto, noted for her compassionate and striking documentary portraits, often of women struggling for recognition, justice or control over their lives. She studied at Britain's National Film School, going on to direct such acclaimed titles as The Day I Will Never Forget, about young Kenyan girls who challenge the tradition of female circumcision, and the much acclaimed Divorce Iranian Style. Jason Silverman, of the True/False Film Festival, calls Longinotto "one of the most prolific and perceptive practitioners of cinema vérité" at work today.
